The Snow Queen

I’ve tackled this character before, I know, but I love this story too much and with the holidays upon us I couldn’t help myself.

I’ve always loved the story of The Snow Queen, but (and I blame Frozen for this)I feel like not enough people know how good the original story is. It tells the story of two friends named Gerda and Kai. When Kai falls under a goblin’s curse that turns his heart into ice, he becomes cruel to the people he loves, especially Gerda. The Snow Queen hears about this and takes Kai away to her kingdom to teach him a lesson and Gerda goes through hell and high waters to look for him. 

Many adaptations portray her as the villain of the story or hardly portray her at all (*cough*frozen*cough*), but I always saw her as the embodiment of winter: cold and, at times, cruel, but still an important part of nature, almost like a strict mother figure.
