The Forgotten Bronte by Kitty-Grimm The Forgotten Bronte by Kitty-Grimm
Just a wee bit of historical humour for you all and to further poke at my Brontė geekdom.

THIS IS TRU FAX! No, really. This actually happened and it's the main reason why Anne is considered the "Forgotten Brontė." Believe it or not, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was a bestseller at the time of its release and sold out in six weeks. However, it was also a controversial bestseller due to its content. Because of this, Charlotte actually stopped the book from being re-published after Anne's death because she didn't want her sister to be remembered in a negative light. She also did the same to Emily by burning a manuscript she had finished before her death.

In short, the reason Anne is so overshadowed by her sisters and that Emily only had one book published is because Charlotte didn't respect her sisters' wishes. I have to say, coming from someone who considers Jane Eyre to be her favourite book, even I have to admit that what Charlotte did was just awful!

So I decided to poke a bit of fun at it and educate some folks in the process.

I love this!<3 Just how I feel.:) Anne is my favourite Bronte, and "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" is so much more feminist than Jane Eyre (I love Jane Eyre) - it should be just as famous!<3

Thank you! I love Jane Eyre too but it really is a shame that Tenant doesn't get enough love and I blame Charlotte for that.

I just wish that the Bronte sisters had lived in a world that accepted female writers.

Yeah...I love Charlotte's work, but I don't like what she did to her sisters' books.

She's my favourite Bronte and she is the least known. So unfair. :(

Thank you! I love her too and it really is unfair that Charlotte did such a thing...to both her sisters, in fact.

Nah. I don't see her actions as disrespectful. The actions of Emily Dickonson relatives were disrespectful, but we are extremely grateful for their defiance of her wishes. I don't blame Charlotte at all... But I am sad about it. And when you think about it, she was the one who would have profited from the books...

I may have worded it wrong, but I've always seen it this way: I understand perfectly why Charlotte did what she did, but I don't think she was very considerate of what her sisters actually wanted. Yes, Wuthering Heights and Tenant of Wildfell Hall were controversial in their time, but they came from the hearts of the authors and Charlotte thought more of what other people cared about than what her sisters cared about. I'm sorry, but I find that highly disrespectful, especially after their deaths.

Ah. I see. So Charlotte was saving face a great deal for herself. Also, if she had published them, people would have said that she was cashing in on her sisters...

Pretty much. If she had let The Tenant of Wildfell Hall's re-publication carry on and had Emily's second novel published, she probably would have faced twice as much flak and her sisters did and, in her point of view, soiled her sisters' memory. I don't think that what she did was right, but that's how it would have been for her.
